Ruo Yu (David) Tao

Incoming CS Master's Student @ UAlberta
Email: rtao3 "at"
Resume: here

I'm excited to announce that I'll be starting my Masters in CS at the University of Alberta this coming fall! I'm currently working on research in model-based RL at the National University of Singapore (NUS). I completed my undergraduate degree in honours computer science student at McGill University. I was previously a research intern at both Mila and Microsoft Research.

My current research interests lie in model-building in a reinforcement learning context. If you're interested in collaborating on something shoot me an email!

National University of Singapore (NUS)

I just recently started working on a research project under Prof. Lee Wee Sun on model-based RL as a research assistant.

Mila (Quebec AI Institute)

I am currently working on a research project in exploration in reinforcement learning mentored by Vincent François-Lavet supervised by Joelle Pineau. I've recently just submitted (as first author) a conference paper to NeurIPs 2020! If you're interested in taking a look at our submission (and are not involved in the UAI reviewing process) let me know!

Microsoft Research Montreal

During my time at Microsoft Research, I worked on reinforcement learning and natural language problems. I was advised by Marc-Alexandre Côté and Layla El Asri on projects including:

  • Adaptive text action spaces: see the below paper!

  • TextWorld: a reinforcement learning framework for agents to learn text-based games. Also see below!

Towards Solving Text-based Games by Producing Adaptive Action Spaces

Ruo Yu Tao, Marc-Alexandre Côté, Xingdi Yuan, Layla El Asri

Accepted for oral presentation for WordPlay workshop, NeurIPS 2018, Montreal

TextWorld: A Learning Environment for Text-based Games

Marc-Alexandre Côté, Ákos Kádár, Xingdi Yuan, Ben Kybartas, Tavian Barnes, Emery Fine, James Moore, Ruo Yu Tao, Matthew Hausknecht, Layla El Asri, Mahmoud Adada, Wendy Tay, Adam Trischler

Presented at the Computer Games Workshop at IJCAI 2018, Stockholm

Articles etc.

  • I wrote a short piece on the dangers of reshaping in tensor manipulation libraries.

  • I was previously a contributor to an RL framework developed by the lovely people at Check out the Journal of Open Source Software article here and the actual codebase itself here.
